Students (and their parents) seeking assistance with homework can use a free online tutoring program available through the county library systems. The program is available to anyone with a Calvert, Charles or St. Mary’s County library card. It provides “live,” expert tutors in all core subjects for students in grades 3 – 12.
HelpNow!, a product of the parent company Brainfuse, is a tutoring service provided by the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association for customers of the three county library systems in Southern Maryland. HelpNow! offers free tutoring daily from 2 – 11 p.m. in both English and Spanish.
“This is a resource we are thrilled to be able to provide,” said Sharan Marshall, director, Southern Maryland Regional Library Assoc. “By working closely with our partner libraries in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s County, we are continuing to serve the community by providing meaningful, valuable services and products.”
Tutoring is available in math (including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and calculus); science (including biology, chemistry, physics and earth science); social studies; and
English or language arts. Reading and writing assistance is also available, including a writing lab for help writing a report or paper.
A foreign language lab is also offered, with live online instruction from fluent language tutors for students with foreign language homework.
“There are no session limits for tutoring,” added Marshall, “so tutoring can take five or ten minutes, or even an hour or more if it’s necessary.”
Besides tutoring, HelpNow! also offers skills-building – helping students master a concept or skill through state-aligned online lessons, presented by tutors in one-to-one sessions.
All online tutors are trained and certified by Brainfuse, and are based in the United States. Each tutor is cleared with a thorough background and reference check, and must have a four-year degree and prior teaching or tutoring experience.
Library customers can access HelpNow! using their home computer, or through a computer at any of the public library branches in Southern Maryland.
